SONY DADC, Manaus, Amazonia, Brasil, Achieves
IRMA Anti-Piracy Compliance Program Certification

31 May, 2007 - Manaus, Amazonia, Brasil - SONY DADC, Manaus, Amazonia, Brasil, is the latest in the worldwide network of the parent firm’s facilities to be certified under the internationally approved Anti-Piracy Compliance Program of IRMA, the Content Distribution and Storage Association. SONY DADC, Manaus, serves the company’s South American customers with a variety of optical media products and distribution services and is the second Brazilian operation to achieve this coveted anti-piracy certification.

The IRMA Anti-Piracy Compliance Program (APCP) is well established in North and South America, Europe, South Africa and Asia with more than 100 media manufacturing plants participating in this program that is endorsed by the world’s leading content owners and their associations.

Mr. Jorge Magalhães, General Director, SONY DADC, Manaus, said, “As our company’s flagship operation in South America, we are extremely proud to join the ranks of SONY DADC anti-piracy compliant facilities around the world. Our company’s dedication on a national, regional and global basis to IRMA’s robust Anti-Piracy initiatives is an integral part of our value-added service for customers. The IRMA anti-piracy certification underscores our commitment here in Brasil where piracy has damaged our national economy. The protection of intellectual property continues to be a primary concern at SONY DADC, Manaus.” According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) more than 80,000 jobs in the music industry alone have been lost as a result of piracy since 1997. In Brasil movie piracy is 30%, music piracy is 40% and software piracy is 61%.

The Manaus operation is one of ten SONY DADC facilities in nine countries participating in the Anti-Piracy Compliance Program.

Timothy J. Gorman, Director – Worldwide Anti-Piracy Compliance Program, said, “SONY DADC’s certification as an anti-piracy compliant plant is indicative of the worldwide concern of content owners about the piracy of their intellectual property. We expanded our Anti-Piracy Compliance Program (APCP) into South America in 2005 in direct response to media manufacturers and their customers who own a variety of intellectual property, including video, music, software and games. SONY DADC has demonstrated its commitment to a strong anti-piracy initiative through its global participation in the APCP and by designing a number of technological optical media initiatives geared to defeating theft by piracy.”

A key element in the Anti-Piracy Compliance Program is the stringent process and standards used by the manufacturing plants to verify copyright licenses of intellectual property. IRMA also has certification standards for optical media destruction and recycling facilities and is expected to launch this summer its anti-piracy and security standards for post-production and similar facilities.

The IRMA Anti-Piracy Compliance Program has expanded significantly in Latin and South America in the past two years with 12 enrolled plants in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.

The IRMA program contains the industry’s first set of international anti-piracy standards for replicators and is a major step in assisting record labels, movie studios, computer software and game publishers to identify replicators that have implemented this program to prevent the replication of unauthorized content.
